Why Curved Cabinets Cost More: The Real Reasons Behind the Price Tag

Curved cabinets are a stunning design choice. They add softness to interiors, break away from boxy norms, and instantly elevate a space with their unique visual appeal. But if you’ve requested a curved cabinet quote before, you may have noticed that it’s noticeably more expensive than standard carpentry.

So, why do curved cabinets cost more?

At White Artz Carpentry, we believe in transparency. Here’s a detailed look at why curved carpentry commands a premium — and why it’s still worth every dollar if you’re after that sleek, high-end look.

1. Curves Require Higher Craftsmanship

Creating a curved cabinet is far more complex than building a straight one. Most traditional cabinet designs use right angles and flat surfaces — the basics of carpentry. But when you add a curve into the equation, things get technical.

Our craftsmen need to:

  • Measure curves accurately

  • Bend or shape materials without breaking them

  • Ensure symmetry and balance throughout the cabinet

This level of precision can only be delivered by skilled carpenters with years of experience. The time and talent involved directly affect the cost.

2. Specialised Materials Are Needed

You can’t create a curved surface with standard plywood. For curves, we often use:

  • Flexible plywood or bendable MDF

  • Custom laminates that can follow curves

  • Special glues and supports to hold the shape

These materials are not only harder to source, but they’re also more expensive than regular panels. In some cases, we may even need to layer and glue multiple sheets, then sand and shape the curve manually.

3. Custom Fabrication Adds Time and Effort

Almost everything in a curved cabinet has to be custom-made:

  • The internal carcass

  • The curved doors or drawer fronts

  • The finishing laminate or veneer

  • Edge-banding for non-standard shapes

Unlike straight cabinets, where some components can be pre-fabricated or cut in bulk, curved cabinets need individual attention at every stage.

This results in more labour hours, and more fine-tuning before it meets our quality standards.

4. Finishing a Curve is Tricky

Bending wood

A smooth, seamless curve requires excellent finishing — and that’s no small task. Whether we’re working with high-gloss laminates or wood veneers, applying them over a curve takes more time and skill.

We often use techniques like:

  • Vacuum pressing

  • Heat bending laminates

  • Hand sanding and polishing curved surfaces

Mistakes are harder to fix on curves, which means greater care is taken to avoid wastage and imperfections.

5. Installation Needs Extra Precision

Even if the cabinet is perfectly curved, fitting it into your home requires additional effort. Walls, floors, and corners in real homes are rarely perfectly straight or aligned — and curved cabinets must be installed in a way that blends smoothly into the space.

This involves:

  • More on-site adjustments

  • Careful alignment with surrounding carpentry

  • Sometimes even modifying adjacent features for a perfect fit

All this makes the installation phase longer and more delicate than usual.

So… Are Curved Cabinets Worth the Price?

If you want a modern, luxurious look that stands out, yes. Curved cabinets:

  • Make your space feel more fluid and designer-inspired

  • Are safer in homes with young children (no sharp corners!)

  • Create a soft, calming visual effect

  • Show attention to detail and high-quality workmanship

At White Artz Carpentry, we take pride in bringing complex ideas to life — including custom curved designs. While the price is higher than standard carpentry, you’re paying for precision, craftsmanship, and one-of-a-kind design.
